Richard Brandt Studio & Paul Hoagland - Ceramic Artists

Richard Brandt:
Richard Brandt has been making art all his life. His study of the Japanese and Chinese tea ceremonies has been tremendously influential. Richard studied tea pot making with the master Ah Leon. And in 2001 he began his life long study of Chanoyu, the Japanese tea ceremony. These studies have allowed him to develop the forms and functions of his various tea related as well as their Wabi spirit.

He currently teaches ceramics at Portland Community College in Portland, Oregon

Paul Hoagland:
I grew up with British roots where a cup of tea was a daily ritual. I’ve been studying ceramics for over 4 decades, but only in the past few years have I studied the tea ware of Chado, the Japanese Tea ceremony, and Chinese Kung Fu Cha. In the past 10 years I’ve had the fortune to have a teacher experienced in wood fired ceramics and tea. I also had an opportunity to use my architectural design and construction skills to finish and furnish a Japanese style tea house. In designing it I was able to utilize my knowledge of the tea ceremony. I currently teach ceramics part time at PCC in Portland.
